It is a great piece of radio journalism about the personal challenges of a monarch (George VI), the uncertainties of war (World War II), the fears of a nation, and a simple poem written a century ago.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Milverton set this little piece against the backdrop of a depressed people. Here are his words of introduction: &#8220;It&#8217;s the eve of the Winter Solstice and\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never known people in this country to be so depressed. The airports are closed, many motorways are grid-locked or snowbound and retailers are taking a beating as customers cannot get to the shops. Talk about a &#8216;bleak mid-winter!'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-929\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/milverton2_500x400.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[915]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-929\" title=\"milverton2_500x400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/milverton2_500x400.jpg\" alt=\"Milverton Wallace\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Milverton Wallace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The radio broadcast may be found for a few more days at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.in\/gBoImr\">http:\/\/bbc.in\/gBoImr<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The poem around which this piece of radio magic was woven was written by Marie Louise Haskins originally under the title of &#8220;God Knows&#8221; and later disseminated under the title of &#8220;The Gate of the Year.&#8221;<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<h4>The Gate of the Year (aka God Knows)<\/h4>\n<div>And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">&#8220;Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">And he replied:<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">&#8220;Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">So, I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">And He led me toward the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our good friend Milverton Wallace in London shared \u00a0a link last night to a BBC &#8220;programme&#8221; that will soon disappear from the Internet.
