No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns against No. 6 Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s two of the highest scoring teams in College football. Yes, it&#8217;s Sports Illustrated&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2008\/writers\/cory_mccartney\/10\/30\/texas.texastech\/index.html\">Game of the Week<\/a>. However &#8230;<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-482\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/football.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[476]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-482\" title=\"football\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/football.jpg\" alt=\"Red Raider fans whoop it up\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Raider fans whoop it up<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students started standing in line at Jones Stadium MONDAY for Pete&#8217;s Sake, to get the best seats (student seating is not reserved). They pitched tents. Some had generators. Tuesday there were a couple hundred who had taken up residence at &#8220;Raiderville.&#8221; They even have a mayor and a police department. By Wednesday there were 700 residents. Thursday another 1,000 moved in. Friday classes across campus were noticeably \u00a0devoid of students. If it were Harbor High in the early sixties, I&#8217;d swear 17th Street was breaking over head with a 15-knot offshore and water temps in the 70s.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div>His Eminence\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Leach\">Mike Leach<\/a>, Master of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spread_offense\">Spread Offense<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com\/2006\/11\/07\/mike-leach-pirate-school-is-real\/\">Pirate Potentate<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=str3J5WQ49s\">once in awhile a pirate can beat a soldier<\/a>&#8220;) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/12\/04\/magazine\/04coach.html?pagewanted=all\">Pigskin Plenipotentiary of the South Plains<\/a>\u00a0paid a surprise visit to the student throngs surrounding the stadium Thursday afternoon. He fed the multitudes while preaching love and (school) spirit to them. One\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lubbockonline.com\/stories\/103108\/loc_350207786.shtml\">eyewitness report worth reading<\/a>\u00a0was written by one of my former students.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_484\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-484\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/raiders_in_black.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[476]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-484\" title=\"raiders_in_black\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reddickfamily.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/raiders_in_black.jpg\" alt=\"Tech football team in black\" width=\"150\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tech football team in black<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All that is interesting enough, but somebody else started moving onto campus Tuesday. ESPN. ESPN is doing their College Game Day thing on the Tech campus. So they started moving in Tuesday. They plunked down their trailers, their trucks, their cameras, their satellite dishes, furniture, fencing and all right in the middle of campus. They took over the Tech Engineering Key with all their munitions. And it&#8217;s clear they agree with Sports Illustrated. This is ESPN&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/ncf\/index\">Saturday Showdown<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>It doesn&#8217;t stop there, folks. All flights out of Lubbock for Sunday were sold weeks ago. There&#8217;s not a hotel room left in town for the weekend. And some enterprising soul has all the local media, students, and even people not ordinarily conscious of Raider football involved in a city-wide &#8220;blackout.&#8221; Tech&#8217;s colors are crimson and black.
