The main attraction was the Schlitterbahn, and that meant we would get wet, right?
Well, yeah, but we had not planned on this scenario. We get to San Antonio on a Wednesday afternoon with plans to spend Thursday at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels. So Wednesday evening, we would visit the Alamo and do the River Walk. All well and good, but the moment we get set at Crockett Street parking, the skies open up. It rained. And poured. And rained some more.
We and a number of other Alamo visitors, crowded the inside displays as the Texas Landmark, and watched a documentary waiting for the rain to let up. Well, it didn’t happen before closing, so we scurried over to the mall and looked for a place to eat. Tony Roma’s won the nod. But that was about all the River Walk we were going to see that night. Rain and more rain.
Thursday, the forecasters said there would be a chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. So we get to the Schlitterbahn a little after 10 a.m., set up base camp, and go our separate ways. We touched bases at lunch time. Then, right on schedule, the thunder came rolling in. Staff cleared all pools, slides, and rides. And it poured again. We waited for an hour then gathered up family at 5 and headed back to the hotel.
If the thunderstorm cut short the daytime activity, we had a wonderful dinner at Mamacita’s restaurant, just up the street from our hotel. Dinner was very much a successful capper for the day, and set the tone for a nice tasting trip home.
